Editorial photography for Financial Times

publications

When the Financial Times (UK) picture desk assigned me to do a new editorial photo series in Amsterdam, I was extremely happy to work on it. Beside a solid editorial photography assignment – where I put my focus on, the subject was also close to my heart: The housing situation in my hometown Amsterdam.

Visually, the main focus was on the Amsterdam North, NDSM area. Where at the moment huge property development takes place. Passing by every month or so, I notice a new tower erected! Being an former heavy industrial area, this is the perfect example of gentrification.

To have the best visual impact of the change I decided to put a lot of effort picturing the skyline of the NDSM area. Since it is located at the river IJ, I shot a lot from the opposite bank, central-side. Using extreme tele lenses.

The article reviews the series, the process of the overall production and discusses the ‘same-sex marriage’ issue. Which was introduced in the Netherlands is 2001 as first first country that officially allows same-sex marriages.

It is great to have the images and the cause made available to this part of the world!

Editorial: the UvA Maagdenhuis Protest

publications

For a while now the University of Amsterdams Maagdenhuis has been occupied by UvA students and activists. The university-wide movement acts under joint name De Nieuwe Universiteit (The New University) and strives for more democracy in the UvA administration (among other demands).

This april, the six week occupation comes to an end. I was there to portray the occupants for Folia Magazine.

Besides the group, I also took them apart. Holding hands together to capture the unity.
