Folia Magazine, an independent publication for the University of Amsterdam I frequently work for, recently got redesigned. With art directors at Vruchtvlees we worked on the photography for the new cover.
They wanted to go for a clean and more graphical shot. In support of the redesign leaning heavily on typography. Vegetables on the cover are digital altered (but all were thrown in air).
Besides the cover photography, we did a lot of additional work for dedicated use on the Foliaweb website and for use in their blog posts.
With the new academic year Folia Magazine, independent magazine for the University of Amsterdam, comes with a new volume. For the first two issues i worked on two editorial portraits. Both as feature and also one for the cover.
First was Emma Curvers, UvA Alumni, columnist and debuting author with Dutch novel Iedereen kan schilderen.
Than there was Sander Wirken, UvA PhD researcher and initiatior of documentary film Burden of Peace about Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala.
The project is still in post-production phase, but the trailer looks really promising!

For a survey of the Rathenau Instituut i worked on the editorial portraits. The dutch institute studies and reports on developments in science and technology.
The survey itself was on shale gas and fracking. Various players in the field were interviewed and along with a study the publication was to spark debate on the issue and to inform decision makers.
A selection of images in print:
For last years Folia Magazine Christmas special i did an editorial series on Amsterdam students. With guest editor-in-chief Ron Blaauw, the dutch double Michelin starred master chef, the series was to be food related.
We followed six UvA and HvA students and portrayed them during dinner.

For a national campaign by de Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax and Customs Administration) I did the photography for brochure U & de Belastingdienst and various online publications. The campaign was to inform on the various services, for private and commercial parties, the Dutch Tax Administration provide.
The agency went for a more documentary approach, with emphasis on people and environment. Although all settings were completely staged (location, models), i really liked to work towards a documentary touch. All images incorporates governmental visual guidelines.
The spreads and two page interviews were complemented with a more personal portrait.
In October 2013, Folia Magazine, the independent weekly of the University of Amsterdam, celebrates its 65th anniversary. For this memorable occasion, the editorial staff decided to go for a special issue with seven 4-page interviews with professor emeriti of the university.
All regular Folia photographers were given one person and had carte blanche for the job. So this edition gives a nice view of different approaches to portrait photography.
I was assigned to Prof. em. dr. Michiel A.J. Eijkman, dentist, appointed as Professor of Social Dentistry/Information Science at the University of Amsterdam (ACTA). A lively speaker and former Navy-man, a recipe for some good stories on-site. I decided to go for a clean, open portrait with full focus on the portrayed.
The result is a 1/1 page portrait, with a follow up on the next page with Mr. Eijkman in his study (click for larger image).
More editorial portraits for the cover of the IDFA Special (the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam festival-paper).
Every cover highlights a certain program shown during the festival. The portraits are combined with stills of the films which are featured in that specific program. Like we did in issue #1, seen here; Holly Hardman for IDFA Magazine.
