Editorial: the UvA Maagdenhuis Protest

For a while now the University of Amsterdams Maagdenhuis has been occupied by UvA students and activists. The university-wide movement acts under joint name De Nieuwe Universiteit (The New University) and strives for more democracy in the UvA administration (among other demands).

This april, the six week occupation comes to an end. I was there to portray the occupants for Folia Magazine.

Marokkaanse Boot in Amsterdam Museum

The Amsterdam Museum (Amsterdam Historic Museum) recently put the Marokkaanse Boot, a Moroccan themed boat at Amsterdam Gay Pride, on display in the museums recent history section.

Shown are the costumes of the Boot participants by Dutch designer Corné Gabriëls. The museum went to me for images, since I documented the Marokkaanse Boot during Amsterdam Gay Pride 2014 fairly well.

I think it is great that the museum recognizes this topic -gay rights- and is proud of it’s role in Amsterdam history.

Visual Diary #024 – CITIZENFOUR

Currently working for the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). One of this festival highlights is the feature length documentary CITIZENFOUR by director Laura Poitras, -the- film about Edward Snowden. It was interesting to hear the story about the process of making this complicated film.

Every year Amsterdam celebrates sexual diversity with the Amsterdam Gay Pride. Highlight of the Pride week is the Canal parade with it’s special themed boats sailing for glory.

For that occasion i made a small portrait setup next to the drop off point at the end of the route. And asked participants to pose for a sec.

Tearsheets : Editorial series for Folia Magazine

For last years Folia Magazine Christmas special i did an editorial series on Amsterdam students. With guest editor-in-chief Ron Blaauw, the dutch double Michelin starred master chef, the series was to be food related.

We followed six UvA and HvA students and portrayed them during dinner.

Visual Diary #014 – WK 2010 short film

Another short film -in the Amsterdam Snapshot Series- i made. Amsterdam turns orange for the World Cup 2010 Soccer Final, in which the Dutch national team made their presence (to no avail by the way). Now, for the EURO 2012, the city turns orange again while the team will have another shot at finals.

The Uur U refers to the H-Hour, the hour before final take-off/invasion/exams/finals (take your pick).

I am Gay and Muslim Photo Document

Parallel to the film documentary I am Gay and Muslim, i made a photo series of the men who are in the film or contributed to it.

With this photo document we wanted to create an opportunity where they can show themselves, in addition to the many dilemmas young, gay Muslims are struggling with in their quest for identity and acceptance by society.

The series is commissioned by the producer of the film, Dutch foundation Stichting art.1.

Some pictures who made it through the final selection and are in exhibition -for now- at screenings of the film:

Documentary I am Gay and Muslim Premiers

After months of work, partly in Morocco, the documentary I am Gay and Muslim premiers during the Roze Filmdagen 2012 (Amsterdam Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2012). A documentary that focuses on the subject of gay rights in the Islamic world.

I am very proud of Chris Belloni, the maker of this project, for creating such a special film on such a delicate subject. And it is really nice to see the footage, which came for a big part from my hands, in 2K digital projection. I got blown away by the quality of today’s digital HD camera’s, as shown in the final version on the big screen. Even footage shot on small consumer camera’s, like the Sony NEX series, still stand out.

See Chris speak about the film and upcoming premiere at the Roze Filmdagen (in dutch), here:

The film is to be seen in Amsterdam till the end of march and will be shown at various international film festivals, for now.
