For Folia Magazine, I was out for a portrait of Dutch journalist and author Casper Thomas. Thomas wrote Competente Rebellen (Competent Rebels), a publication about the 2015 Maagdenhuis occupation at the University of Amsterdam.
Picture had to be taken with Maagdenhuis in the background. The situation 10 minutes before shoot:
#ouch When you got assigned to have a specific building in the picture and you find this upon arrival. Result in tomorrow’s Folia Magazine. #editorialphotography #behindthescenes #streetphotography #maagdenhuis #lifeasphotographer

Portrait photography on the streets can be challenging; you can almost never have full control of all things in a crowded area. I let things just happen and try to take benefit from the element of surprise.
And there was, in this case, some digital altering involved.
The result in de publication (click image for larger view):
For a while now the University of Amsterdams Maagdenhuis has been occupied by UvA students and activists. The university-wide movement acts under joint name De Nieuwe Universiteit (The New University) and strives for more democracy in the UvA administration (among other demands).
This april, the six week occupation comes to an end. I was there to portray the occupants for Folia Magazine.
Besides the group, I also took them apart. Holding hands together to capture the unity.
And in the publication, Folia Magazine cover 25th of april:
The Amsterdam Museum (Amsterdam Historic Museum) recently put the Marokkaanse Boot, a Moroccan themed boat at Amsterdam Gay Pride, on display in the museums recent history section.
Shown are the costumes of the Boot participants by Dutch designer Corné Gabriëls. The museum went to me for images, since I documented the Marokkaanse Boot during Amsterdam Gay Pride 2014 fairly well.
I think it is great that the museum recognizes this topic -gay rights- and is proud of it’s role in Amsterdam history.
They choose this image, showing the Marokkaanse boot during Amsterdam Pride 2014 canal parade.
Every year Amsterdam celebrates sexual diversity with the Amsterdam Gay Pride. Highlight of the Pride week is the Canal parade with it’s special themed boats sailing for glory.
For that occasion i made a small portrait setup next to the drop off point at the end of the route. And asked participants to pose for a sec.

A short film shot on Queens-day 2013 – the last Queens-day for a while. On the 30th of April 2013 HM Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated and left the throne for HM King Willem Alexander.
As usual with Queens-day, Amsterdam turned orange. With this years royal succession, the city was flooded with the Dutch armed forces, blazing in full ceremony glory.
Another short film -in the Amsterdam Snapshot Series- i made. Amsterdam turns orange for the World Cup 2010 Soccer Final, in which the Dutch national team made their presence (to no avail by the way). Now, for the EURO 2012, the city turns orange again while the team will have another shot at finals.
The Uur U refers to the H-Hour, the hour before final take-off/invasion/exams/finals (take your pick).
For some time now, i am working with moving pictures. Although most still experiments, i do not want to withhold this particular beautiful combination of the city of Amsterdam, mist and street singers.
